The Ivy Charitable Endowment of Pittsburgh, Inc. was established in 1997 and serves as a vital extension of Alpha Alpha Omega chapter’s commitment to service, scholarship, and community impact. Created as the chapter’s philanthropic arm, the foundation supports charitable and educational initiatives and helps ensure that the chapter’s work continues over time.

The foundation was established by a group of visionary women who recognized the importance of long-term planning and financial stewardship.

Founding Members/ Incorporators:

Mrs. Nancy Bolden

Dr. Delphina Briscoe

Dr. Ogle Burks Duff

Mrs. Jean E. Johnson

Mrs. Ruthie D. King

Dr. Daria (Kirby) Crawley

Dr. Audrey J. Murrell

Dr. Rhonda L. Taliaferro

Attorney Stephanie Hickman-Walton

Through thoughtful discussion and planning, chapter leaders, including then-Chapter President, Ruthie King, advanced the creation of an endowment that would provide long-term financial stability, security, and independence. By investing proceeds from prior fundraising efforts, the incorporators created a sustainable and reliable funding base to support scholarships, programs, and new initiatives well into the future. This work reflected both a deep respect for the women who built those resources and a commitment to those who would benefit from them in the years to come.

As Dr. Audrey J. Murrell reflected, “we thought about the future of our sisters we would never meet but wanted to ensure their continuity and ongoing service would live on.”

That vision continues to guide the foundation today.

Over the years, the foundation has supported a range of impactful programs and initiatives. Signature efforts such as Pearl Academy and the Precious to Cultured Pearls Cotillion which provided opportunities for young people to develop confidence, leadership, and life skills. The Cotillion, in particular, prepared participants to present themselves with confidence, apply for scholarships, and navigate life beyond high school. The impact of these programs is lasting, with several former participants later becoming members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.

In recent years, the foundation has expanded its reach through more direct service. This includes providing small grants to organizations, as well as supplying uniforms, personal care items, food, and household goods to schools and refugee families. These efforts reflect a continued commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the community.

The foundation also plays a critical role in supporting the chapter’s operations and growth. As a 501(c)(3), it serves as the primary vehicle for fundraising and grant funding, strengthening the chapter’s ability to sustain and expand its programs. It also serves as a model for other chapters seeking to establish similar structures.

The foundation continues to operate in partnership with Alpha Alpha Omega chapter, with a shared focus on service and community impact. This relationship is built on collaboration, trust, and mutual support, allowing both entities to work together in service to the community.

Today, the Ivy Charitable Endowment of Pittsburgh, Inc. stands as an essential part of the chapter’s legacy. It reflects a commitment to stewardship, sustainability, and service, and continues to expand the chapter’s capacity to do more in fulfillment of “Service to All Mankind.”
